Marsalis
Brasilianos brings together Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis,
one of the giants of the jazz world who is increasingly being recognized as a
complex and sensitive classical musician, with members of a remarkable Brazilian
orchestra. Philharmonia Brasileira (Gil Jardim,
conductor) and Marsalis celebrate the rich and sensual music of Heitor
Villa-Lobos in “Marsalis Brasilianos.” Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) melded
Brazilian folk music with the European classical tradition to “scrutinize
the soul of the land and the character of the people.” Program selections will
include Villa-Lobos’ Fantasia for Saxophone, Bachianas Brasilieras (“Brazilian
Bach Pieces”) and Milhaud’s Scaramouche. This program is uniquely
suited to Marsalis’ mastery
of both jazz and classical music, allowing the language of Villa-Lobos’ compositions
to truly shine.
