Staller Center opens the
season with The Clean House by Sarah Ruhl, a whimsical, romantic comedy.
You’ll meet Matilde, a Brazilian maid who hates cleaning; her employer Lane, a
driven American doctor; Lane’s surgeon husband Charles; and other unforgettable
characters. The Clean House explores how far we are willing to go for the
ones we love. The play will be staged in one of the Center’s intimate black box
theaters.
The Clean House
received the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and was a finalist for
the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The Asylum Theatre Company, a group of
professional actors, has staged a range of productions over the past decade
including The Tempest, which was honored with inclusion into the Royal
Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages Festival.
The Clean House
is a co-production of Staller Center, Asylum Theatre, Stony Brook’s
Department of Theatre Arts and the Oberon Foundation.

The razor-sharp comedian
Colin Quinn brings his fast-paced stand-up routine to Staller Center’s
Recital Hall. He recently starred on Broadway in his self-written oneman show
Long Story Short, directed by Jerry Seinfeld, which became an HBO special.
A native of Brooklyn who
attended Stony Brook University, Colin Quinn began his career in New York as a
regular on the comedy show circuit. He spent five years on “Saturday Night Live”
and then starred in the Comedy Central series “Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn.” He
played on Broadway in Colin Quinn—An Irish Wake and has appeared in many
movies.

Winterreise (Winter’s Journey) will be sung by Randall Scarlata,
baritone, accompanied by pianist Gilbert Kalish. A haunting setting of 24 poems
by Wilhelm Müller, the songs follow the lonely winter journey of a poet whose
love has left him for another. This is a unique opportunity to hear one of the
greatest song cycles ever written.
Mr.
Scarlata has been described by The Boston Globe as having “the vocal
wherewithal to do just about anything he wants.” Gilbert Kalish’s profound
influence as pianist in myriad performances and recordings has established him
as a major figure in American music making.

Brazil’s high-powered fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement and modern dance brings

New York City’s Joyce Theater in the spring of 2012, “Dance Like a Fight – Fight
Like A Dance,” crystallized their style in a title.

Reverse Thread, world-renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter plays African
folk melodies re-imagined, making music that’s jazzy and beautiful. By adding an
accordion and kora, the West African harp traditionally played by village

sound. Some of the music from her album Reverse Thread is based on field
recordings of singing by Ugandan Jews, other pieces layer the rhythms of African
music with harmonies from India and Puerto Rico.

Les
Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is a marvelous company of male dancers
performing the full range of the ballet and modern dance repertoire, including
classical and original works in faithful renditions of the manners and conceits
of those dance styles.

“Trocks” comedy is achieved by incorporating and exaggerating the foibles,
accidents, and underlying incongruities of serious dance.
Men dance all the parts—heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans,
sylphs, water sprites, romantic princesses, and angst-ridden Victorian ladies.
